BTS brought a new impression to the White House when appearing on May 31. Their appearance has become the subject of much discussion and the center of attention.
It is not only this year that BTS received the attention of White House politicians, but a year ago, what they said moved the minds of the leaders. That's the real reason BTS is invited to Washington DC this time.
The issues that the president and BTS discussed at the White House, it was shown through a brief video recorded by the White House and posted on his personal Twitter.
President Biden said, “This is an important month here in America. A lot of our Asian American friends have been subject to real discrimination. Hate only hides. When good people talk about it and say how bad it is, it goes down.” Revealing the reason for the group’s invitation, he added, “People really care about what you say.”
BTS really proves their influence on issues of rαcιsm and víσlєncє. They once gave speeches at the United Nations on racial harmony and self-love.
The group as well as the fandom once had a donation of $1 million each to Black Lives Matter. The group has also repeatedly spoken out in defense of races. What they convey is one of the biggest reasons why Wḧïẗe House officials have invited them to Washington this year.
Specifically, a WH official spoke more in detail that from the letter BTS posted in 2021, they have noticed BTS's influence on the race issue!
The group ever shared a letter detailing their own experiences with rαcιsm, condemning discrimination, and calling for an end to víσlєncє after eight women, six of Asian descent, were ḳïŀŀed in a shooting spree in Atlanta.
They wrote: “We have endured expletives without reason and were mocked for the way we look. We were even asked why Asians spoke in English. We cannot put into words the pain of becoming the subject of hatred and víσlєncє for such a reason. Our own experiences are inconsequential compared to the events that have occurred over the past few weeks. But these experiences are enough to make us feel powerless and chip away our self-esteem.”
The letter, tweeted out on March 30, 2021, with the hashtags #StopAsianHate and #StopAAPIHate, was the most shared tweet of the year. WH staff recognized that “They have been very vocal about the hate that's happened in αmєrícα,”.
A WH official told Teen Vogue that: “We've done events throughout the month with many prominent Asian αmєrícαn figures. This was just one to close out the month with someone who Asians all over the world look up to, especially Asians in αmєrícα. Visibility matters, and representation matters on screen. Them being prominently featured on the podium and with the President — I think it's soмєтнing great for young people all over the country to see Asians represented in the Wḧïẗe House.”
Therefore, the appearance of BTS at the Wḧïẗe House brought a new and exciting atmosphere to the briefing room, where reporters were ready to wait for BTS. According to Teen Vogue, on the way to the conference room, CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins said, “It’ll be a fun one today.”
Not only that, when BTS appeared, in addition to political issues, reporters gave them more attention. Some people were shouting “When are we getting a world tour?!”. Some cheered them on before going to meet the president like "BTS fíghting!", "Good luck" or "Good job".
After BTS left the briefing room, Wḧïẗe House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre continued her briefing, she said the group wanted to speak directly to reporters about how “important it was for them to use their platform to be here to talk about issues that matter to them, in particular the anti-Asian hate that we have seen across this country these past few years.”
Even an important Wḧïẗe House staff member like Brian Deese, Wḧïẗe House Director of the National Economic Council, joked, “I can tell my kids BTS opened for me.” The Teen Vogue reporter also seemed to note the presence of the press in the room “experienced significant deflation” after BTS’s departure.
That shows how much influence BTS has! Even politicians and reporters can't deny their charm!
