The issue of BTS's military service continued to become the focus of attention when the Korean Ministry of National Defense conducted a public opinion poll on this issue. This is one of many surveys that have been created.
This issue still seems to be a dilemma and cannot come to a final conclusion despite all the proposals and solutions presented to the Parliament!
Recently, according to a Korean press report, the Korean Ministry of Defense will set up a poll about BTS and their mandatory military service. This is also what has been mentioned by the President of Korea and the Ministry of National Defense before. They want to consider people's opinions on this issue before making a decision carefully.
There have been many previous surveys and most of the comments in favor of giving BTS a privilege. However, there are also many objections that make the matter more difficult to reach a final conclusion.
As many know, Korean men are required to serve their country when they reach adulthood. Normally, Korean men will start enlisting at the age of 18 and 30 is the mandatory age for enlistment.
Sometimes, celebrities or special circumstances are allowed to postpone enlistment for a year or two. The case of Jin and other BTS members is enjoying this priority after submitting a request for postponement.
In addition, there are other priorities for national athletes and musicians can be exempted from military service if they achieve high achievements in the international arena such as Olympic medals. Those deemed unfit can also be exempted from military service in severe cases or transferred to units where they do not need to be on the front lines.
The case of BTS has been debated for many years now with the aim of making pop artists or idols also eligible for exemption. In the case of BTS, they are widely recognized that they have brought much glory and fame to the nation.
Some even argue that BTS has brought more recognition to Korea than other artists or athletes. However, the issue also encountered many conflicting opinions and the government was forced to collect public opinion to decide on this issue.
Defense Minister Lee Jong Sub, announced on August 31, 2022, that they had set a deadline and requested a prompt poll on the matter. He further explained that they will make a prudent decision based on aggregating the opinions of different legislators and considering national interests at various levels.
Although he promised to make a decision as soon as possible, the government remains cautious on the matter. Earlier this year, the head of the Military Manpower Committee expressed concern about the lack of military resources and the principle of fairness if BTS were exempted from military service.
