GQ magazine is no longer a strange publication to Kpop fans. This magazine has collaborated many times with BTS and other K-pop artists. But it seems their latest article recently revealed a huge unforgivable error for such a popular newspaper.
Specifically, the incident happened in the latest article of GQ Magazine when collaborating with TXT recently. After the article was released, many K-Pop fans pointed out accusations of rαcιsm against Hueningkai and SHINee, disrespect towards both TXT and BTS, poor editing, and misinformation.
Here's the whole thing that is making fans extremely angry:
GQ Magazine recently featured TXT, along with a quick interview for their latest issue. GQ Magazine is a very popular monthly men's magazine, based in New York, founded in 1931. The publication focuses on men's fashion, lifestyle and so there are many male K-pop artists. appeared on the cover of this magazine. BTS is one of its familiar artists.
GQ's article about TXT wouldn't have been a problem if it weren't for the weird tweet that the company had introduced about the group's interview. The caption of the tweet and the article on Twitter drew attention for its incorrect claim that HYBE created TXT to be the "next BTS".
In the tweet, GQ magazine wrote: "Their label wants them to be the next BTS. Their fans want to be them. But the five young members of TXT are really looking forward to having a cheeseburger."
This is said to be ignorant and easy to create conflicts for fans of the group. This problem has been explained many times before by the two groups. Fans also pointed out Jin and Jimin once addressed the idea of a “next BTS,” explaining that they wanted their juniors to gain “bigger success if they explore their own way.” Fans commented on the post to share that sentiment and noted that TXT and BTS are completely different groups with unique colors.
That's not all the quirks that appear in this latest article. When reading the article, fans noticed an alleged act of rαcιsm. The author, Chris Gayomali, referred to Hueningkai as “the hapa who makes everyone laugh.” They discovered the word hapa is a shortened form of the derogatory phrase hapa haole, which refers to a mixed-race Hawaiian.
Specifically, Chris Gayomali wrote in the description of TXT members as follows: "In person the TXT boys are all beautiful (yup) and reticent like shy teenagers (a little disarming), with pores so small you’d need an electron microscope to find them.
The group consists of Soobin (the tall sєхy one), Yeonjun (the other sєхy one; also the consensus best dancer among the guys), Taehyun (the enthusiastic one who dominates the groupchat), Huening Kai (the hapa who makes everyone laugh), and Beomgyu (a gentle angel from heaven)."
The derogatory mention of Hueningkai’s mixed ancestry—and doing so in a joking manner—upset fans. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the only section regarding race that infuriated readers.
In addition to incorrectly stating that Soobin was in “a gang during middle school”, instead of correcting it. In fact, Soobin joins a school band rather than "a gang". They also made an obvious mistake when writing about Taehyun's inspiration for becoming an idol.
The article mentioned that he was "chilled" when he watched a "Chinese music video". This expression of theirs seems to cause many people to criticize Taehyun while the music video that inspired him is not by a Chinese artist at all.
In many interviews, Taehyun mentioned watching SHINee's "Replay" as a child and being inspired by them to become an idol. He remembers being especially surprised by Taemin. That is the true source of his artistic inspiration.
However, in the inspiration description, GQ wrote: "Taehyun knew he wanted to be famous when he was six or seven. ‘It was this Chinese music video,’ he says. ‘I got chills watching the music video! It was so cool.’
Soobin also performed a gang in middle school. His favorite song to perform was ‘Beautiful Night’ by Ulala Session.
Huening Kai, meanwhile, learned to play music from his dad, and loved Avril Lavigne’s ‘Sk8er Boi’ (he said see you later boy)."
In addition to the poor editing that fans pointed out, they noted that the article also misspelled Hueningkai's name. That paragraph included: "What are your personal devils? I ask eagerly. Your guilty pleasures? ‘Purchasing items in video games,’ says Heuning Kai. ‘RPGs.’"
This angered many fans because it was clearly a TXT interview but they misspelled almost everything. Not only that, but they also lack respect for big artists like BTS and SHINee, which is tantamount to disrespecting TXT.
As a result, fans expressed anger and demanded an apology from the newspaper and editor:
- It didn’t make it any better. Are we talking to a grade-schooler? Can’t they get it?
- this is soooo uncomfortable to see happening :-)
- why do y’all love to mention bts when it’s about txt? stop the comparison, bigh̾i̾t ̾ is not even pushing them to become the next bts because there is NO next bts. bts is bts, TXT IS TXT.
- Pls change the caption or better delete it, coz txt is txt..
- I was just put off by the article entirely..looking at the descriptions for the members that r somєthing out of a 2012 wattpad book...saying that huening kai is "the hapa that makes everyone laugh" as if him being mixed is a character trait is weird as fυ¢к
- that really pissed me off.
- They disrespect TXT, BTS and SHINee, need an apologize here
- they need to delete the whole ∂αми article. it can’t be saved
The author of the article has gone private on his Twitter and Instagram accounts, and the magazine has yet to issue a statement on the matter. The magazine then edited the caption and replaced the derogatory term referring to Hueningkai. However, other parts have not been changed at all.
