The Truth About Official Complaint To Military Deferment Law of Ministry Of National Defense By Numerous Kpop Agencies

Issues related to BTS's enlistment have always been a topic of discussion for many people over the years. Not only that, it is also an opportunity for many people to spread false rumors in order to reduce BTS's reputation as well as create a negative view of the group. For example, the story of many Kpop agencies filed complaints about the amendment allows BTS to postpone military service. And the truth behind is:

This year is probably a tumultuous year for BTS as the oldest member - Jin has reached the age of enlistment. Currently, Jin as well as the members of BTS are waiting for the final decision of the National Assembly on whether to exempt from military service or replace enlistment with another equivalent form. This happened due to the proposal of adding a new law exempting from military service for K-pop artists who have a great influence on Korean culture and economy. However, there is no official conclusion yet.

That is why, the closer the time comes, the more rumors, fabricated scandals and outrageous lies surrounding this matter, created and conjured up by haters, protestors and those who want the group and the company to collapse. But there is truth that you need to know before think about it.

First of all, the ongoing debate in the country’s National Assembly largely stems around why athletes and classically trained dancers and musicians are able to earn exemptions from the country’s mandatory draft for their international successes, but pop stars and modern artists are not included in this, originally instituted in 1973. This debate was initiated by opposition lawmaker Ha Tae-Kyung of the Bareunmirae “Righteous Future” party in July 2018. She also apologized BTS for the controversies they met after her suggestion: "I am sorry to hear that BTS have become the center of this political debate. I have tried to address the reality of popular music, which is suffering from severe reverse discrimination compared to classical music… There is no guilt for BTS and their fans. Please throw all the stones to Ha Tae-kyung, a member of the National Assembly.”

Then, in 2021, the Ministry of Defense proposed a revised military postponement law and was officially accepted. The Korea Music Content Association then filed an official complaint on behalf of several K-pop companies, including Korea's "Big Three" companies: SM, JYP, and YG, about the disapprove of the set criteria to benefit from this rule change. The reason they give is that the criteria to be applied is so narrow that only BTS can achieve it. So they hope that there will be a broader change in the criteria to benefit many other K-pop stars.

In protesting, the KMCA said the amendment was “unrealistic and unfair” because the new rule allowed any artist who had received a cultural award from the country's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. may defer their military service for two years. A KMCA spokesperson continued:  “We are not blindly saying we want lower standards. The current bars are unrealistically high. How are musicians supposed to meet a criterion that’s impossible to achieve? All we ask is that the ministry come up with standards that can be met and fulfilled by musicians, not extraordinary measures that cannot be made”.

Meanwhile, when reporting on this issue, many parties have taken a more negative point of view that entertainment companies against the postponement of military service for BTS. But in reality, they're just protesting that Congress sets the bar too high so it is hard for other Kpop artists to get this law.

In general, all public knows and recognizes the impact of BTS on the Korean economy and culture. Even so, the consensus on their enlistment is still vague and remains a very sensitive issue. It can effect many problems related around so it takes time to give final decision. But it is not means that some toxic individuals could mock or make false rumor about BTS.

Besides, Big Hit Music, BTS, and ARMYs in general trust the Korean government to make the right decision and judgment in the best interest of their country and will fully support any decision that will delivered on time. The National Assembly has also announced that they will consider finalizing the matter by the end of April. In the end, what we should do is calm down and wait!
