The fact that BTS performing a free concert in Busan for the WORLD EXPO 2030 BUSAN KOREA CONCERT event has made ARMYs look forward to more than ever. However, along with the excitement was the disappointment when the organizer announced the free concert venue as well as many other conditions around the place.
This made ARMYs and many other fans uncomfortable. Even the Busan government is facing a lot of criticism in the process of holding this concert.
Recently, BTS's concert in October was announced to be held at the outdoor parking lot of the Busan Port International Passenger Terminal. With so many other stadiums located in Busan, including Asiad Stadium built for the 2002 Asian Games, many people find it very confusing that the government chose that outdoor venue.
Of course, with 100,000 spectators going to attend, they would need a large area. But the site is said to be difficult to navigate.
Although the government has promised that it will mobilize trains and buses in the city as free transport for the concert, fans are questioning the real intentions behind the decision. Here are the reasons that fans give when criticizing the way the Busan government works:
1. Infrastructure issues:
The concert venue is said to have an inconvenient transportation system. The region has many innate infrastructure problems.
As shown in the map below, the concert venue (highlighted in gray) has only two exits marked with dots. Concertgoers have to cross the river to get to the nearest train station. There are only three bridges available, marked with a red arrow.
Although the government promises to mobilize public transport and shorten the waiting time between each train, with the number of 100,000 spectators who come to see the concert, the problem still cannot be solved fast. This will make it difficult for concertgoers to move to the performance venue.
2. Lack of facilities:
The surrounding area also does not have any restaurants or hotels. Fans would have to bring food with them to the area and travel a distance to their accommodations.
3. Question about the number of tickets:
Many ARMYs are worried about the concert that is expected to serve about 100,000 attendees. Given what the authorities are doing, many wonder if they are really prepared and have the solutions to deal with more than 100,000 people.
Fans have already started using BTS's performance at the former Wembley Stadium in London as the standard. Concert at Wembley Stadium with a capacity of 90,000 people. Although, 100,000 people of Busan is not impossible, looking at the reality of what is going on, the Busan government still faces many criticisms for being too greedy about the number of people.
4. Bad plan for crowd movement:
The government announced that they plan to open the venue from 9am. With the show at 6 p.m., they're confident that everyone can get in on time.
The issue, however, is how much concertgoers will have to endure during the 9 hours spent at that venue. Furthermore, it can take a long time to clear the area.
Even with the current traffic conditions, if the concert ends at night, concertgoers can leave the venue as late as dawn the next day.
5. Toilet issue:
The toilet problem was also a pain for the Busan concert. ARMYs pointed out that the government only announced plans to install dozens of portable restrooms at the site while the crowd numbered more than 100,000.
Even the concert at Wembley Stadium had to mobilize 2,700 toilets to accommodate 90,000 people while fans still complained about queuing for a long time. So clearly with the plan of less than one hundred toilets for the crowd of 100,000 people, the city of Busan will not provide enough toilets for the crowd.
6. Affecting commoners:
In a statement, the Busan government also said that it is even considering assigning planes and KTX trains from other parts of Korea to Busan, only for concert-goers. It may partially solve the traffic in this place, but it will definitely affect the people here.
Not only that, the large number of people flocking to this place will create a great pressure on the area that does not have enough facilities. People in this area will certainly face many difficulties in moving and living when the concert takes place.
So why did they choose this place?
Fans began to speculate that it was because the Mayor of Busan, Park Hyung Jun, who is behind most of the government decisions in the city, owns the land in that area. The colored areas as shown below all belong to Park Hyung Jun or those related to him. They are in the Ilgwang area, where a BTS concert is going to be held.
Many people think that the Mayor will benefit when the value of the land increases after the effect of the concert. Not only that, this area will grow as more people come to the concert.
In addition, holding a concert here is also said to have a good effect on Park Hyung Jun's plan to build Urban Loop. If Urban Loop thrives economically, he will also receive profits on his purchased land.
Therefore, many people believe that is why Park Hyung Jun and the Busan government held a concert in that area. Although ARMYs are excited about the upcoming concert, many are also criticizing politicians for using BTS for their own profit.
