The story of BTS's m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ enlistment seemed to have been resolved after members like Jin, j-hope and SUGA enlisted. But it seems it is still a favorite topic of politicians and is discussed even now.
Recently, In Yohan, chairman of the innovation committee of the People's Power Party, once again sparked BTS's exemption from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service. He made a statement requesting exemption from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service for the rest members of the group after αѕѕuming this role. Not only that, his other statements also created great controversy.
Below is the attitude of the chairman of SK innovation committees towards the exemption of BTS members from duty:
For several years now, there has been a clear divide between those who believe BTS should be exempt from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service and those who believe it is a "national loss" regarding BTS's enlistment. But this debate happens between politicians or netizens and BTS has never considered m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service as an issue that should be exempted or not.
Finally, Jin and j-hope quickly enlisted in the army in late 2022 and early 2023 while SUGA performed m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service as a social worker in September. BTS members proactively enlisted in the army and planning for all members to complete m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service by 2025 shows that the topic of m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service exemption has never been a concern of theirs. BTS received praise for their loyalty to their country.
Meanwhile, even when BTS enlisted, the debate about exemption from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service for BTS continued to rage among politicians. Most recently, In Yohan, chairman of the People Power Party's innovation committee, once again repeated this story. He was recently appointed chairman of the innovation committee at the end of October and pledged to come up with policies to change the face of the nation.
On the 13th, Chairman In appeared on JTBC's YouTube live show 'Genreman Yeouido' and shared one of his strategies. When he was asked: "Please tell us the direction of the innovation. What will you do right now?", he mentioned the issue of BTS's m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service and said that the group plays a big role in building the nation.
President In objected to previous politicians' decision to let BTS join the army. He said: "Look at BTS, why did you send BTS to the army? If you said you had medals (in sports) you wouldn't have gone to m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service. Today I will make a statement , please exempt BTS from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service."
Then, when the host of the program mentioned, "BTS has already enlisted," he replied, "Not really, let's quickly exempt the rest." His statement surprised not only the host of the program but also all those watching the conversation. It also quickly became a topic of discussion when many people were skeptical that President In relied on the BTS-related controversy to become famous after taking office.
Many people also think that this is an absurd statement in the context that 3/7 members of BTS have enlisted in the army and the remaining 4 members are also preparing for this. Most fans believe that BTS's enlistment ended the debate regarding the group's m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ exemption, so he shouldn't spark this debate again. Exempting the remaining members from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service is also unfair and BTS members will certainly not accept it even if it becomes true.
In another controversial statement by President In, when asked his thoughts on whether another group, SEVENTEEN, should be exempted from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service, President In said: "The evaluation should be considered objectively". He continued: "I am a huge fan of BTS and they have promoted our cultural content around the world. Keep them - the idols who earn trillions of won per member".
With his statement, the host argued against whether a person should be exempt from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service just because he earns a lot of money. President In immediately countered: "Is it because of money? It's about enhancing the country's position." President In's mentions on this show quickly attracted fans' attention and are expected to soon become a hot topic of debate on SNS!
