Many non-fans were surprised to learn that Jin was the oldest member in the group because they didn't see him "commanding" the other younger members. Not only that, Jin often interacted with the other members as if "there was no age gap".
This made many people wonder why Jin didn't order or impose the "oldest person" rule on the members of the group. On a talk show, Jin shared the reason why he didn't do so and fans had to laugh at his humor.
However, thinking about the real reason behind it, fans felt more respect for Jin:
кσяєαns place a lot of importance on hierarchy in a group and Kpop idols are no exception. Those who go before, those from the previous generation will be called seniors and those from the next generation will be called juniors. The senior-junior culture is deeply ingrained in the thinking and lifestyle of every кσяєαn.
In dramas or reality shows, fans often see this cultural trait clearly expressed. Typically, when meeting seniors, juniors are always the ones to bow or use honorifics in communication. Junior idols are not allowed to behave disrespectfully towards senior idols. If they violate, they will face heavy criticism.
However, for BTS, the relationship between members in the group is very special. Jin is the oldest member in the group, but fans often see Jungkook playing with him or Jin and the members talking very naturally without using honorifics.
Even comedian Park Myung Soo realized this and curiously asked Jin on a show if the younger members treated him with respect, he jokingly replied, “No, they only swear at me! But at least they use honorifics.”
Park Myung Soo continued to ask, “As the oldest, when you say ‘Hey, can you do it properly?’, do they listen?” Jin answered that he feels his members’ sкιℓℓs are better than his, so he can’t really boss them around like that. Park Myung Soo admitted that he also felt the same. While Jin is the madhyung (oldest brother) of BTS, Park Myung Soo was the most senior among the cast members of the variety show Infinite Challenge.
Well, it seems like the hierarchy rule doesn't always work. Just kidding! In fact, Jin saying that he doesn't boss the members around and even joking about their relationship shows his comfort. Not only that, it's also a sign of his belief that the younger members know their limits and would never do anything too impolitely to him.
Jin's relationship with the rest of BTS has been reflected in many times over the years. Although he always tries to erase the age gap to integrate with the younger members, the maknae line also knows how to respect and listen to him in many cases.
Furthermore, in the book "Beyond the Story: 10-Year Record of BTS", translator Aton Hur mentioned Jin and his rejection of "elder privilege". Aton Hur writes: "Jin expresses having to confront a feeling of insecurity, a concern that he was the weakest link in the K-pop group. This was so surprising to me because he is the eldest in a group of boys. So, by default, [in ḳöŕệän culture], he should feel the most entitled. He should feel like he's the biggest deal. But he doesn't feel that way. He has all of the responsibilities of being the eldest but, at the same time, he doesn't seem to enjoy the privileges of being the eldest [with] that feeling of security."
Ultimately, every BTS story proves that they are truly a close-knit family!
