In the world of K-pop, appearance has always been an important factor for idols. They are not only evaluated through their talent and music, but are also often seen as trendsetters in style, from fashion to hairstyles. Changing one’s appearance according to different concepts or eras is therefore quite common for artists in this industry.
For BTS, each member has gone through different style transformations throughout more than a decade of activities. In the early years after debut, SUGA often appeared with various neat short hairstyles, sometimes dyed in bright colors to match the group’s strong and youthful concepts. Those hairstyles became closely αѕѕociated with the image of a sharp and charismatic rapper during the early stage of his career.

However, in recent years, the hairstyle SUGA seems to prefer the most is long hair. Sometimes he wears it in a mullet style, while at other times it appears as longer hair with soft, natural waves. Many fans believe that long hair perfectly matches SUGA’s more mature vibe in his thirties, while also making him look even more artistic and charismatic.

In an interview with GQ, the topic of SUGA’s style also came up for discussion. The magazine quoted a question from a fan — “How has SUGA’s style developed over the years?” — as a reflection of ARMYs’ admiration for his current aesthetic.
The BTS members then commented that SUGA’s appearance has gradually taken on a more “thoughtful” and artistic aura over time. J-Hope even remarked, “I think SUGA’s style has become a bit more rock,” before continuing the conversation about how his hairstyle and overall style have changed over the past few years.
In response, SUGA revealed that this change actually started about three years ago. And the reason behind his long hair is surprisingly simple. He shared: “The reason I grow out my hair is because my parents like it. That’s really the only reason. My mom always liked my hair longer.”
His answer made the entire group laugh. RM even joked, “She likes the prince style.” SUGA then added that when his parents saw him with his head shaved during his military service, his father commented, “Long hair suits you better.”
In fact, this is not the first time SUGA has said that his parents are the reason he keeps his hair long. In a previous live broadcast, he once confessed, “Honestly, I don’t really care about the length of my hair, but my mom really likes my long hair. She was very sad when I cut it.” He has also mentioned this several times to fans in other moments.

During another lighthearted conversation with j-hope, SUGA even shared a funny anecdote related to the phrase “My mom liked the long hair.” When he said that, j-hope immediately asked, “Oh for real? Can’t say no to mom.” SUGA then continued, “People were telling me getting a haircut was a good idea so I told them my mom liked the long hair and they said — you looked good with long hair too.” The story made many people laugh because even those around him seemed to go along with his mother’s opinion.
Notably, in December last year, SUGA revealed that his parents had moved to Seoul and are now living with him. This has led many fans to believe that his mother might indeed be the one “convincing” him to keep his hair long — soмєтнing that makes fans who love this hairstyle even happier.
What makes this story even more meaningful is SUGA’s journey with his family. In the past, he once went against his parents’ wishes when he chose to pursue music instead of focusing on academics. Yet after achieving success in the arts, he is now willing to follow a small wish from his parents — simply keeping his hair long. His love and respect for his parents deeply moved fans, who commented:
- What i cry to bcs music rock or his long hair bcs his parents. What i do
- Agree with min parents, Long hair fit him fairly. Shout out to Mama and Papa Min
- Im with his mom on this, Yoongi looked incredible with long hair, best hairstyle I've seen on him
- He was looking really good with long hair. I liked it very much. Especially how he looked in the Busan concert. Thank you my dearest mother in law
- Bangtan members are such a great son to their mom
- The fact that SUGA keeps his hair long simply because his parents like it is honestly so touching. No matter how big of a global star he becomes, he’s still a son
- He once fought hard to follow his own dream, but now he shows his love for his parents in the smallest, sweetest way
- Yoongi may look cool and tough on the outside, but moments like this remind us how soft and caring he really is, especially when it comes to his family
