In many developed countries, young people often tend to obtain a driver’s license early, as soon as they reach the legal age, not only for convenience in commuting but also as a way to affirm their independence and maturity. The BTS members are no exception. Jin – the eldest of the group – even obtained his driver’s license quite early and once frequently took on the role of a “personal chauffeur” driving the youngest, Jungkook, to school.

In reality programs where the group went on vacation together, fans also often saw the members taking turns behind the wheel, but with one single exception – the leader, RM. Regardless of who the driver was, the one sitting in the pαѕѕenger seat, humming along to the music and enjoying the comfort, was always RM.

Even though he is already a global star with enormous wealth and has reached the age of 30, fans often see RM using public transportation such as the subway or riding his bike along the Han River, even for commuting to work. On several occasions in the past, RM honestly admitted that he was afraid of driving because of his somewhat careless personality, while the other members implied that no one should ever let RM drive. SUGA even told RM that he “shouldn’t drive for the sake of world peace.” The members also showed “extreme care,” reαѕѕuring him that he did not need a license, as they would hire a driver or call a taxi for him if necessary.

These reasons may sound humorous and convincing, but they are actually not the whole truth behind why RM has not taken the driver’s license test. In reality, there is an illness that makes driving difficult for RM, and he has had to hesitate a lot before making a decision.

In an Instagram post, RM shared a vision test result sheet as an answer. According to the results, the idol suffers from severe myopia of over -11 diopters in both eyes, along with astigmatism of about -2.50 diopters. This level of eyesight is clαѕѕified as “high myopia,” significantly affecting his ability to see in daily life.

Although RM has thick corneas and his intraocular pressure, tear film, and pupils are all normal – favorable conditions for laser refractive surgery – with such high myopia and astigmatism, surgery still carries many risks. Therefore, for many years, he has continued to live with nearsightedness and his glαѕѕes.

On the other hand, even though RM’s eyesight would still meet the requirements to take the driver’s license exam if he wore glαѕѕes, the extremely high prescription could affect his long-distance vision or vision under abnormal lighting conditions, especially when driving at night. Combined with his clumsy nature, perhaps RM has not felt confident enough to take the wheel, which is why he still does not have a license.

During promotions for Indigo, RM once expressed his determination to take the driver’s license test when he had free time, but it seems that determination has since faded.
