Kpop Ignored At Grammys For 2 Consecutive Years: Conservative Recording Academy or BTS' Shadow?

The prestigious GRAMMY Awards ceremony has just taken place, attracting enthusiastic attention from global music fans. As the most prestigious music award in the world, being nominated for a Grammy is considered an extremely important recognition for artists and works.

However, in recent years, the public and fans have raised questions when Kpop was absent for 2 consecutive years at this award ceremony. Kpop fans criticized the Academy's conservatism in giving priority to US-UK music while others felt that it would be difficult for a Kpop group to reach the influence of BTS.

Here is what the public and industry experts are discussing after the 67th GRAMMY Awards ceremony:

The 67th Grammy Awards ended on the morning of February 3, marking a bustling year in the world music scene. As in recent years, the results of the awards ceremony have caused controversy among the global public. In addition to the fact that Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande did not win any awards, the Grammys were also criticized for not having any кσяєαn artists appear and, more importantly, not having any K-pop artists nominated.

This is the second consecutive year that кσяєαn stars have been absent from the Grammy nomination list, although K-pop still shows great influence in the global music market. BLACKPINK's Lisa submitted six nominations for her two songs ROCKSTAR and New Woman but did not receive any nominations. Groups such as BLACKPINK, SEVENTEEN and Stray Kids have achieved many significant achievements, even holding tours at large stadiums in the US, but were still ignored by the GRAMMYs.

This raises many questions about the Academy's selection criteria and whether the awards truly reflect the diversity of the world's music scene. USA Today also expressed skepticism that K-pop artists were not included in the nomination list, despite their growing popularity and influence. However, it is worth noting that despite K-pop's large global fan base, the GRAMMYs do not consider an artist's popularity when awarding awards. This may cause disadvantages for artists from non-Western cultures.

To date, BTS is the only K-pop group to have been nominated for the Grammys for three consecutive years from 2021 to 2023. Previously, BTS was nominated in the 'Best Pop Duo Performance' category for three consecutive years from 2020 to 2022. Notably, in 2022, they were nominated for a total of three categories, including 'Best Music Video' and 'Album of the Year'. They are also the only K-pop group to have been invited to perform at this prestigious award ceremony. Some experts believe that the absence of K-pop artists at the GRAMMYs is because they have not yet achieved the level of global influence that BTS has achieved.

They commented: “No K-pop group apart from BTS has ever been nominated, and no group has reached their level of influence yet. While Stray Kids and TXT have shown growth, they haven’t reached the scale required for Grammy consideration”.  Besides, there are opinions that the αмєяι¢αn music industry is still conservative and not ready to recognize K-pop as an integral part of popular music.

In addition, a debate has broken out over whether K-pop should be considered a separate music genre. Some experts believe that while Latin pop and Afrobeats have established themselves, K-pop is still struggling to be recognized as an independent genre. In the US, the performance element - an important part of K-pop - has not yet been recognized by industry experts as a decisive factor for an award like the GRAMMY. This raises the question of whether K-pop needs to change its approach to fit the Academy's criteria.

However, the end of the 2025 Grammys does not mean the door is closed for K-pop. Many K-pop stars are trying to expand their global influence by releasing English songs and actively promoting in the US. BLACKPINK, NewJeans and a number of other groups have made significant strides on the Billboard charts, proving that they are fully capable of competing with international artists.

Notably, at the end of 2025, fans will welcome the full return of K-pop superstars - BTS. The group's return brings hope to fans about a future where the name of a K-pop group will be announced at the most prestigious music awards ceremony on the planet!
