The topic of BTS's m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service has attracted a lot of attention since the group had not announced plans for their m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service several years ago. There were even fierce debates about whether or not the group should be exempted from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service because of their outstanding achievements internationally.
But in the end, BTS quietly chose to enlist early and no m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service exemption law was introduced. Their bold decision was considered to have ended all previous controversies, but in reality, there were still issues being discussed even after the group enlisted. One of them is about Kpop fans asking for exemptions from service for other Kpop artists because of their international achievements.
Of course, this caused ARMYs and many netizens to protest when comparing BTS's achievements with other Kpop artists in the criteria to be exempted from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service. Below are the reactions of ARMYs and netizens when fans of other groups suggested this:
With the recent enlistment of Jimin and Jungkook, all seven members of BTS are in the process of completing their m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service. However, when many other different contents carefully prepared by BTS members before enlisting are released such as documentaries, entertainment content or talk shows... people think that the gap of their military service almost won't exist.
The group's m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ enlistment was once a big worry for many people because they thought that the top Kpop superstars enlisting would leave a huge loss to the development of the Kpop industry, kσrєα's economy and other fields. Therefore, for a long time, many politicians proposed to exempt the group from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service because BTS had received Cultural Merit medals, reached the top 1 on Billboard many times and was nominated for GRAMMYs,... However, in the end the law to exempt the group from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service was not established because some thought that BTS's international achievements were "not enough".
However, recently, fans of many other Kpop groups have started proposals regarding exemption from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service for Kpop artists with "some international achievements". Typically the names mentioned are Seventeen and NCT 127, whose members are expected to enlist next year including S.Coups, Jeonghan and Taeyong of Seventeen and NCT 127. With the related law amendment bill stuck in the National Assembly for over two years, their fans are reported to be "eagerly waiting for the related law to be revised."
Previously, the m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service exemption law was only for individuals with high achievements in the fields of arts and sports. But now, fans of these groups point out that other K-pop artists can similarly promote national prestige by topping international charts or winning national awards. They said that this time is when the government must make choices in accordance with the spirit of the times, opening the door for Kpop artists. If the m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service exemption law is for limited areas as before, "the values of equity and fairness that the government has emphasized may be shaken".
These arguments seem to contradict what they said about BTS during the time when the group became the subject of debate about whether or not they should be exempted from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service. Even though at that time, BTS was a group with much greater international influence and international achievements than any other Kpop artist, they were still criticized as not worthy of being exempted from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service.
Now, when fans of these artists having received fewer international awards than BTS want the m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ exemption law to apply to their idols, certainly ARMYs and netizens object vehemently. Many people point out that 26 companies and their fandoms signing in a petition protesting exemption from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service for BTS only realize the value of this law when their idols must enlist now.
However, to be considered exempt from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service like BTS, other K-Pop artists do not seem to qualify. It is believed that if BTS has enlisted, there will be no exceptions for the groups after them:
- IF BTS IS SERVING EVERYONE ELSE WILL TOO
- If being the biggest group on the planet doesn't give u exemption, then nothing else should. BTS went to m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷, so everyone else has to go as well...
- What do you mean too the hot 100?? Only bts as a group and soloists did that.
- Please, if a group that gave sokor 4.3 billion won economy every year did not get exempted, no other group should! Periodt
- Neither of these groups ended up on the hot 100 though
- Wait, why should other members of various teams be released from m̷i̷l̷i̷t̷a̷r̷y̷ service? Now the reality has dawned on them that they will not record or sing for almost two years. BTS members ARMY prepared us to go into the army, and Jin will return in six months.
- BTS paved the way for everyone to serve! Period
- "it is time to make a choice that fits the spirit of times", yeah you made it and you sent the most influent group (and Artist) on the planet, so why should less known groups get an exemption now??? there's no way.
- If BTS is not exempt, nobody else should
- Man. If they start giving exemptons now. I literally want Bangtan to leave their country. Like. I'm so sorry I know even they will hate me for saying this but. This is literally ungreatfulness and harαѕѕment at this point. No other country would've treated them like this.
- So when was all this when bts were on the verge of enlisting and being the scapegoats of the gov, if BTS are serving their country now without waiting for exeption then no other groups deserve it, now all this matter they are not hidding that they have issues with BTS
- I think there's almost 0 chances for any musical act to be exempted . Idk about athletes but no one from the kpop industry will get that cuz k-army will rampage .
- Ha ha ha.. They must be joking right??.. When the reason for the bill is gone why is the bill still exist??..
