GRAMMYs 2023 takes place on February 5 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. This is also the third time BTS has received a nomination at this prestigious award.
In the third year of competing at the Grammys, K-pop phenomenon BTS ended the night empty-handed once again. But from the perspective of fans and experts, they all insist that this does not mean a failure at all. Not only that, the кσяєαn media has revealed their views on why this is not a failure.
Here's what the media is saying about BTS and the Grammys these days:
BTS has shown their extraordinary strength when being nominated for GRAMMYS for three consecutive years in the category of Best Pop Duo / Group Performance. This year, BTS and Coldplay were nominated in this category for their collaboration song “My Universe”. Additionally, BTS' title track, "Yet To Come," from their compilation album, PROOF, was nominated for Best Music Video. With the participation in composing in "My Universe", the group was also nominated as a featuring artist on the album Music of Spheres – nominated in the category Album of The Year.
Even so, another year of Grammys to look forward to has päṩṩed without BTS winning any more Grammys. This year, Best Music Video went to Taylor Swift and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance went to Sam Smith and Kim Petras. The general äṩṩessment of the winners is that they all deserve the award, expressing soмєтнing different and new through their music.
The GRAMMYs, Billboard Music Awards, and the αmєrícαn Music Awards, are considered the three major αmєrícαn music award ceremonies. The nature of the three ceremonies is different in that the Billboard Music Awards determine winners based on chart performance, while the αmєrícαn Music Awards determine winners through popular vote.
If the two award ceremonies focus on grades and popularity, the GRAMMYs are decided by the votes of the members of the Recording Academy, placing more importance on musicality. If BTS won the GRAMMYs, it would mean that their musicality, not topicality or popularity, would also be recognized. Winning the GRAMMYs would also be a great addition, as they have already dominated major charts and award ceremonies around the world.
However, just because BTS did not win the GRAMMYs does not mean that their musicality was not recognized. This is because there are many artists that receive recognition without a GRAMMY award history. In the case of ABBA, which was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Performance alongside BTS, was their second nomination, and yet they did not win. But there are no fans who disparage ABBA’s achievements of musicality just because they did not win a GRAMMY.
Hip-hop icon Tupac, Katy Perry, and Sia, who нιт the Billboard charts in the 2010s, also have no ties to the GRAMMYs. Looking at it straightforward, there wasn’t enough to predict BTS’s win for the GRAMMYs this year. In 2020 and 2021, BTS swept the world with “Dynamite” and “Butter.” On the other hand, they released the PROOF album in 2022 but did not lead to worldwide activities.
Pop music critic Kim Young-dae, "Although more Koreans have their eyes on the Grammys thanks to BTS and thus have high expectations, there are numerous big names, such as Snoop Dogg, who were nominated countless times but have not won yet. Focusing just on the final win would be unfair. Getting nominated itself holds significance."
Seoul-based pop music critic Kim Do-heon said the same thing, adding that there is a greater prospect of a Grammy win if BTS continues to create their own music about their own story. "I personally hope BTS could make more albums like the 'Map of the Soul' series through which they voice their own stories. When the series' albums were released, Grammys had their own troubles inside. But, hopefully in 2025-26, when the group is set to make a full return, the members will be more mature and capable of making their own music that could leave a socially meaningful mark in the US music scene," Kim said.
BTS themselves have said that winning the Grammys is important but not their top priority. RM once said: “We didn’t come to Vegas for the Grammys. We came to focus for the ARMYs! The records, the titles, accomplishments, the trophies, they’re really important, but that wasn’t the first thing, the first reason why we started all these things...". Meanwhile, Jungkook mentioned: “I think our status is there whether we win Grammy or not. It made me realize that, while I knew that winning the Grammy Award is a huge deal, I wasn't really interested in actually winning one. I'm more interested in improving myself through my music".
In the end, BTS is still BTS, a legend in the hearts of fans when their music is heard, felt and brings positive influences that everyone must recognize!
