K-Pop Reporter Receives Huge Criticisms For Controversial Claims About BTS "Beyond The Story" Book

With ARMY's immense support throughout BTS's career, of course, there are many people who envy and crave it. It's really an admirable power of the crowd and it shows how successful and influential BTS is to the mαѕѕes.

However, many people also use the power of ARMY to criticize and even misrepresent them as negative things. Recently, a reporter specializing in K-pop received a lot of criticism after attacking ARMYs for buying and selling recently released "Beyond The Story" books in large quantities.

This reporter's arguments and comments about BTS and ARMYs are completely false and it makes BTS fans unreasonably mocked. Currently, ARMYs are asking this female reporter to apologize for her offensive words:

BTS has been debuting for more than 10 years and that is also the time when ARMYs have accompanied and supported the group to reach the success it is today. The power of BTS and the ARMY fandom is a huge, undisputed force that anyone can admire.

It is great both physically and mentally. In fact, when looking at the large number of albums, merch, related products or products promoted by BTS, ... can also be seen. But of course, supporting such products is a common thing in K-pop for any fan.

However, a K-pop journalist recently criticized ARMYs for consuming too much of BTS and Myeongseok Kang's biographical books "Beyond the Story: 10-Year Record of BTS" by BTS and Myeongseok Kang, which were released on the 9th. July 2023. Specifically, that reporter is Haley Kang of ḳöŕệä JoongAng Daily. In the column "Issues & Insiders," this reporter shared his opinion on why the book was so successful, topping the New York Times bestseller list.

It's worth noting here that instead of honestly and positively reflecting on the reason for the book's best-selling, this reporter imposes that it's because ARMYs need soṃệẗḧing to spend money on because the group is currently in a hurry. did not release albums, merch... during their gradual enlistment. Along with that, this reporter believes that the scarcity of content released by BTS during this time makes ARMYs have to cling to books for entertainment.

She said in the interview: "There’s also probably a bigger reason behind a book reaching No. 1 on the list by a ḳöŕệän K-Pop band, right? Well, first of all, if you think about it, BTS’s ARMY are known for their formidable purchasing power. They buy up to 3 million copies of BTS album whenever they release one…

And ever since June of last year, if you notice, their has been no album of BTS because of their official announcement of a group hiatus. So, ARMY need some place to spend their money and channel their pαѕѕion into."

Not only that, but Yang compared it to K-Pop fans buying more and more albums during the peak of the pandemic because no one could attend the concerts. So she thinks the book was bought by ARMYs out of desperation about the content.

She continued: "And it’s the same as how CD sales have been skyrocketing since the pandemic started and social distancing was at its peak, K-Pop fans couldn’t spend their money on concerts or meet and greets, anything in-person. So, they decided to channel a lot of their funds for supporting their stars into bulk-buying their CDs because they couldn’t spend it on anything else. And I believe that a lot of the solo projects and even this book that BTS or BTS-related stuff are being released, the fans are deciding to show their support by purchasing their usually, you know, CD money on these merchandises. This time, I think the book was a very great form of BTS’s appeal to be released in the market when the fans are really thirsty for content."

Immediately after the interview was released, ARMYs were extremely angry at the fabricated reasons that this female reporter had maliciously directed towards ARMYs. They point out that there is no scarcity of BTS content or merchandise. Even ARMYs have been very busy since the beginning of the year until now when BTS members have continuously released solo albums, solo singles, solo tours and many other great projects.

With that said, as an OT7 ARMY, they spent a lot of money on all of the members' releases. So there is no need to despair to the point of buying large quantities of books like what Haley Yang mentioned. Simply, ARMY buys them just to look back on the group's journey or simply to support the idol like any other product. Even people who are not BTS fans buy them.

Some other fans don't even need to buy too many books as they can view them online or download pdfs for free viewing. Therefore, even the perception of buying many books at once by ARMYs is an inaccurate and unrealistic statement.

ARMY has criticized Haley Yang for lack of research and for making false and unprofessional statements about BTS and their fans. They also asked for an apology from the female reporter after making up weird things about the fandom:

- Lol btw to say “ARMYs bulk bought the Book, cos they had no CDs to spend money on”… Lady… u serious? Were BROKE!.. We had 6 albums to buy in 1 year! What other fandom has that ever?! 8 photofolios, all the member merchandise, DDAY Tour, singles to support…. We’re just THAT strong and BTS has that demand… goodness gracious

- B1sh, my bank account says otherwise. I’m broke af from all the albums, merch, live streaming D-Day, this book, etc lol

- From the day i preordered the book, to the day payment was processed and book was shipped, $ rose by 4 points... i paid almost 1.4× times the original i had preordered it from.. So yeah... i did not bulk buy it for sure

- Is she serious? BTS HASN'T RELEASED MUSIC?! LIKE INDIGO, FACE, JITB, THE ASTRONAUT, TAKE TWO, SEVEN, AND DDAY WERE JUST FIGMENTS OF OUR IMAGINATION? LADY THERE IS NO LACK OF MUSIC OR MERCH...DO YOUR FREAKING RESEARCH AND STOP WITH THE DUMBASS HOT TAKES.

- I know....how can they invite someone to talk about soṃệẗḧing they have no idea about....

- My wallet has been in more pain after "hiatus" then prior lol. I have 8 (7 members + BTS) different spending directions

- I need these so called journalists to stfu 1- They don't WANT to do their research 2- They are just trying to always downplay BTS achievements This woman here need to stfu saying "army bulk bought BTS book" ARMY NEVER EVER bulk bought soṃệẗḧing,BTS being biggest band & artist having biggest fandom in the world & we are soooo many that BTS sold millions of books. BTS impact & demand is the biggest in entire world & these so called journalists will never accept this BTS in their chap 2 had folios & each member literally 7 members own work & everything been sold out it's cuz they have biggest fans in world, each one of us buy & support. BTS are the biggest band & biggest act in the world they don't have to prove their demand.

- She should be su3d for defamation and libel

- Lady, no one is bulk buying the book. They don’t even have Photocards in the book.

- bought 3 copies. The Kindle version because my physical copy was delayed, a physical copy for myself (which will be arriving in 10 days), and a copy for my friend, who couldn't get it for herself. 50M+ ARMY on the planet: releases will do well.

- More than half my friends don’t even own the book. No one was bulk buying it. There were even ppl sharing audible accounts to listen to it. If all of us could afford a book, THE sales would be beyond what they are. Refusing to acknowledge how large our fandom is!

- I agree. In one of the gc with armys, there were only few of us who have the book coz of the cost. They just downloaded the pdf/book version(free). Imagine if all army can afford all that. Same as albums and other bts merch, not all army can afford but still, lots of army can.
