South кσяєα’s special military service benefits for athletes have long been a controversial topic. Under current regulations, South кσяєαn men are required to complete 18–21 months of mandatory military service. However, athletes who win gold medals at the Asian Games or medals at the Olympics can be transferred to the sports personnel program, which includes basic military training, 34 months of professional athletic activity, and 544 hours of community service. This arrangement is commonly referred to as a “military service exemption.”
The controversy surrounding this policy intensified in October this year after South кσяєα’s U-23 national football team won gold at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. The players openly placed “military service exemption” at the top of their priorities, treating it as their biggest goal and even describing it as a reward for winning. Their attitude of “playing solely for the goal of receiving a military service exemption", along with some boastful remarks and the fact that several players received the benefit despite playing very limited minutes, sparked fierce public criticism and calls for reform.

Against this backdrop, the South кσяєαn public and some lawmakers brought up BTS as a contrasting example. Despite helping elevate their country's international standing, the group still fulfilled their military service obligations in full. Notably, Jungkook — one of the figures being brought into this debate — recently made a move that appeared to reflect his stance on the issue, drawing considerable attention.
Specifically, on the 7th, Jungkook was spotted reposting an Instagram video titled “Things I Almost Said Out Loud.” The clip, which was only about four seconds long, showed a man standing at a podium with a satirical message: “If winning a football match can exempt you from military service, then why did BTS still have to serve in the military? I almost said that out loud.”

Jungkook’s action surprised many fans, as military service is a sensitive topic in South кσяєα and BTS rarely gets directly involved in debates of this kind. This time, however, Jungkook did not hesitate to repost content explicitly mentioning BTS, leading many to interpret it as a sign that he agrees with the view that the current military exemption system is deeply unfair, as well as an indication of some of his frustration over how BTS has been treated.
Previously, when BTS was preparing to enlist, there were numerous discussions and debates surrounding the possibility of granting the group special treatment. Some argued that BTS should be exempted from military service in recognition of their enormous contributions to the country. Others strongly opposed the idea and even criticized the group, despite the fact that BTS had never requested or demanded any special treatment.
Despite the controversy surrounding them, all seven BTS members voluntarily enlisted in accordance with the regulations, completed their military service one by one, and were all back by July 2025. Now, they have returned to their successful music careers as some of the world's leading K-pop superstars.

On social media, fans and netizens praised Jungkook's move, arguing that nothing could make a stronger statement than the fact that those who arguably deserved an exemption never demanded one, yet still willingly fulfilled their duty to their country before returning to successful careers after completing their service:
- Bro wasn't kidding when he said how bad he felt in the militay. He also said "If we went you have no reason not do military service"
- The satirical sketch spoke NOTHING BUT FACTS. the way they called out the military exemption double standards… bts paved the way, broke records, and did more for the economy than anyone else yet the government played in their faces. #JUNGKOOK reposting it is so loud
- BTS put SK on the map. Made it a top destination. That is real economic impact that still sustains its economy with all the entertainment, beauty and food industries… benefiting from their Midas touch.
- The military era was one of the worst periods for jungkook that repost alone tells you enough they clearly didn’t even want to enlist so stop romanticizing soмєтнing they didn’t even want atp it shows how you only keep him around to feed your sick fantasies
- Jungkook reposting that satirical sketch about military service double standards is peak comedy. like even he looks at how bts served while others got a free pαѕѕ and thinks i almost said it. we love a petty king who sees right through it all and stays completely unbothered
- LMAOOO!! To be honest i'm glad they aren't pαѕѕive with the way they were treated for military exemption (not given) and how the gov were using them for their economy. People were already saying if bts went why shouldn't you but when that athlete talked all sh1t went down
- He is so messy I love him so much. I had a laugh I just love it when they bite back
- Jungkook is soo good at clocking sнιт at the right time with this and with the sarcastic military service repost , I love his idgaf energy
