ITZY is one of the most beloved 4th generation K-pop female idols today. Among them, the youngest member Yuna is one of the members having the most fans in the group.
Part of the reason for this is because she received attention from the very beginning of her debut thanks to her participation in the MV with BTS members. This rare opportunity became a stepping stone for the public to be impressed with this K-pop female idol.
However, when reviewing those footages, Yuna couldn't help but feel regretful for not completing the scene as expected. She shared both the joys and disappointments during the process in a live broadcast:
It seems to be a common practice among K-pop idols for trainees to appear in the MVs of famous idols before their debut. This is how management companies attract the au∂ιєnce's attention to their rookies. Among BTS's MVs, there were a few Gen 4 idols who participated before their debut. ITZY's Yuna and Ryujin were two of them.
In 2017, 2 years before ITZY's debut, Ryujin and Yuna participated as female characters, paired with BTS members in the Love Yourself Highlight Reel series. After that, the Love Yourself album became one of BTS's most successful albums. Naturally, Ryujin and Yuna also became a hot topic when they appeared in it as female co-stars.
When both idols debuted, they also admitted that the opportunity to act in BTS's MV helped them a lot and they were grateful to BTS for that opportunity. On the other hand, because they were very young at that time, both of them also had some regrets about their first roles. Especially the youngest member Yuna! She shared some surprising things when she recalled the memories of working with Jungkook.
While Ryu Jin plays a female dancer with scenes showing her beautiful visuals and graceful dance moves, Yuna plays a patient who meets Jungkook at the hospital. She talks about her role: “Frankly speaking… Can I say this here? I honestly felt so bad for myself.” The reason for this disappointment is that while playing a patient, she cannot look as healthy and beautiful as the other girls who appear on the reels. Instead, Yuna appeared with a tired look.
Yuna humorously shares how the staff made Yuna look like a patient: "The other girls had makeup on, lipstick on. They made the other girls so pretty. But, for me, they hardly put anything on my face. They said, ‘Yuna, we have to make you look sick.’ So, they put foundation instead of lipstick on my lips. So, I turned out to be like that."
In addition to giving her character a sickly look, Yuna explained that she was not allowed to smile in order to keep her scenes on point. When filming ended, she was surprised to find that she didn't appear in the final shot. A flower was used to replace her.
She recalled, "I couldn’t smile. And, I’m someone who looks pretty when they smile. I had the IV taped on my arm like that, walking around. When the filming was done, it was time to go. When I watched the ending scene, I wasn’t even there. Ah, I thought I became the flower."
Not stopping there, Yuna also honestly talked about her youthfulness, which led to regrets in not being able to do a good job with the role. She said that she was only about 14 years old when filming the MV, so she didn't have much experience. She made mistakes in some scenes and it was even removed during post-production. Specifically, it was the scene where she warned Jungkook to avoid danger.
Yuna also mentioned the line that was originally in the script at the time: "Ah, right. ‘Careful, it’s dangerous.’ But, it sounded like, ‘Careful!’ Because back then, I was just a trainee. I was new to that kind of environment since it was my first time in front of so many staff. So, I sounded quite awkward like that."
She continued,“Then, they told me to take out, ‘It’s dangerous.’ They said, ‘Yuna, just raise your hand instead.’ " Although the director tried to change the line with action so that 14-year-old Yuna could express herself more comfortably, the scene didn't meet the requirements, "so, my line just went away.” Whenever she thinks back, Yuna regrets not having better scenes with Jungkook.
In the end, even though the role and the scene didn't go as planned, the experience of filming the MV with a famous senior like BTS gave her a memorable experience and opened up a successful career!
