HYBE has announced that BTS will enlist in the military in order, starting with Jin, the eldest member of the team.

According to BIG HIT MUSIC, Jin applied to cancel his enlistment extension and will follow the enlistment procedure of the Military Manpower Administration. The other members will also perform military service sequentially according to their plans.

Previously, Jin, who was born in 1992, was permitted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to postpone his enlistment in accordance with the Military Service Act amended in 2020, and his enlistment had been postponed until the end of this year.

The current Military Service Act stipulates that persons with special skills in the fields of arts and sports prescribed by Presidential Decree and recommended by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism may be given an extension or exemption from service. However, the enforcement ordinance of the Military Service Act does not include 'popular culture' as a specialty in the field of arts and sports, so the issue of whether pop culture figures who promote national prestige can also receive this benefit had been raised. In Korea's entertainment industry, many insisted that BTS should be allowed to enlist in alternative military service, but discussions at the National Assembly level were sluggish.

As Jin has withdrawn his 'postponing enlistment until the age of 30' extension, he is expected to enlist as an active duty soldier as soon as a notice of enlistment is issued.

Big Hit Music shared a statement regarding not only Jin, but all BTS members having to do their military service. On behalf of BTS, they said that BTS embarked on concrete preparations to fulfil mandatory military service. BTS member Jin (Kim Seok-jin) will apply for the cancellation of postponement of enlistment at the end of October 2022, and will follow military service-related procedures.

Specificially, HYBE announced that: "BIGHIT MUSIC is proud to announce today that the members of BTS are currently moving forward with plans to fulfill their military service. After the phenomenal concert to support Busan’s bid for the World Expo 2030, and as each individual embarks on solo endeavors, it’s the perfect time and the members of BTS are honored to serve.

Since the creation of BTS over ten years ago, the band has risen to international success, broken records, and catapulted K-Pop into the global stratosphere. BIGHIT MUSIC has focused to the milestone moment when it would be possible to respect the needs of the country and for these healthy young men to serve with their countrymen, and that’s now.

Group member Jin will initiate the process as soon as his schedule for his solo release is concluded at the end of October. He will then follow the enlistment procedure of the Korean government. Other members of the group plan to carry out their military service based on their own individual plans. Both the company and the members of BTS are looking forward to reconvening as a group again around 2025 following their service commitment.

With the release of their first anthology album earlier this year it opened the path to allow the members to take some time to explore individual projects. Now, Jin is a Korean 30 years old this year and has been postponed from his military service to continue promoting with BTS. He originally requested to postpone his enlistment until December 31. He is expected to enlist as soon as he receives his enlistment notice.
