Goo Hye Sun was born in 1984 and was a famous hotgirl before suddenly shooting to fame with the female lead role - Geum Jan Di in the TV blockbuster 'Boys Over Flowers'. In 2016, Goo Hye Sun married actor Ahn Jae Hyun, who was 3 years younger than her and her co-star in the K-drama - Blood. In 2020, Goo Hye Sun announced her divorce from Ahn Jae Hyun and denouncing her ex-husband's betrayal and contempt at the same time.

After the divorce scandal, Goo Hye Sun revealed in an Instagram post that she will retire from the entertainment industry. Since then, the actress's life became closed to the public and fans rarely saw her on screen until the 4th episode of "Real or Reel" produced by tvN, which aired on May 16, 2024. The actress's story begins with her sharing: "I wasted too much money. After some bad things happened to me, my family became harmonious." Then, a scene that surprised many people appeared when the VCR was shown. The VCR showed Goo Hye Sun inside a car parked in the parking lot of her school in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul at 6:30 am. The actress showed off her most natural look with her puffy face inside a car parked outside in the December sunlight.

Introducing herself, Goo Hye Sun said, “I’m Goo Hye-sun, who has not acted for 7 years. Time flies so fast. I first entered Seoul Insitute of the Arts in 2003 but dropped out after six months. After working hard to make a living and being absent from school for nearly 10 years, I desired to return to school and was accepted to the Department of Imaging at Sungkyunkwan University in 2011. I stu∂ιєd there for 4 years. I’m 40 and 20 years older than the freshmen.”

Then, the actress also shared about her current situation after ending her noisy marriage: no home of her own, studying for a PhD. She expressed: “I don’t have any place to live. I actually don’t have a home right now. My mother’s house is in Incheon and I keep going back and forth from there. On exams and important days, I stay in my own car or sleep in the library. Going from Incheon to school takes 3-4 hours so I have to leave home at 6:30 a.m. for clαѕѕes that start at 9 a.m.” 

She can't even rent an apartment in Seoul at this time. She talked about the difficulties: “I used to live in a gosiwon in front of the school but my contract ended last semester. There was no place that would sign a three-month contract with me”.  However, Goo Hye Sun had remarkable perseverance when mentioning: “I thought, ‘Since I’m already here, why not try to be the No.1 in studying?’. I don’t accept things like being late or absent so I always arrive at school 2-3 hours early”.

What surprised many people was that Goo Hye Sun equipped her car with a sleeping mat and other items to support her daily life to turn it into a mobile home. Meanwhile, many people felt sorry for the situation of the "Boys Over Flowers" Goddess when she washed her face using wet tissues, ate cup noodles, instant rice, and snacks in the car, and took a bath in the school’s bathroom

The actress revealed: “I rarely wash up and can live well without shampoo. I take a bath using only one soap, then wash my face. There’s no need to use body wash. I only use lotion”. Hearing her story, MC Choi Daniel commented, “As a fellow actor, I worried about you”.

However, her difficulties were also compensated by her academic achievements with almost perfect scores at the university. Her competence was even recognized by the school professor. As a movie director with a lot of experience with film festival screenings and awards, the actress revealed that she had written many scripts and had works released on Netflix.

Regarding the reason she focuses on studying, the actress said: “In a way, I was a successful daughter, but I also faced many failures. Their biggest dream is that I complete my stu∂ιєs and graduate.”  In February, a graduation ceremony was finally held. Goo Hye-sun’s family appeared at the ceremony with bright faces. In addition, Goo Hye-sun proudly showed her certification for ranking in Top 5% of her department.

Not stopping there, even when life is difficult, Goo Hye Sun shared that she will continue to pursue her doctoral stu∂ιєs for the next 8 years. She said: “I might not be able to work a lot. I want to pursue a doctor’s degree and it will take 7-8 years. Once I get the degree, I might do soмєтнing different from what I’m doing now.”
