In the world of K-pop, idols are often caught between two major pressures: their own personal style and the expectations of fans. Idols are usually praised when they maintain an image that fits the fandom’s taste, and easily criticized if they suddenly change their style.
Even a small change in clothing, hair length or color, hairstyle, or makeup can spark intense reactions — turning admiration into opposition, or worse, dislike.
To maintain their appeal, many artists choose to follow the trends fans prefer or stick with an image that has been well-received for a long time. While this can help them attract a loyal fanbase, it also limits their ability to reinvent themselves or express their individuality.
Because of this, many idols have to think carefully before trying soмєтнing new — even if it is soмєтнing they genuinely like. This is no exception for globally renowned K-pop superstars like Jungkook. A recent lighthearted conversation between him and V highlighted this very dilemma and sparked debate within the fandom.
While chatting about physique and gym habits, Jungkook suddenly asked V: “You got a haircut?” He quickly replied: “No cause it got into my hair.” Jungkook continued: “Pretty simple reason. I’m gonna grow my hair out, ARMYs will hate it won’t they?” while laughing. V followed up with a half-open comment: “ARMYs like my short hair, so…”
What seemed like a playful exchange immediately caught fans’ attention, as it revealed how clearly idols are aware of the weight of public opinion. Jungkook’s joking remark, “I’m gonna grow my hair out, ARMYs will hate it won’t they?”—though said with a laugh—hinted at the pressure idols face when changing their appearance.
At several points in recent years since 2019, Jungkook grew his hair long, at times styling it in soft waves that gave him a romantic look. Fans also occasionally saw him with hair long enough to be tied back.
However, a portion of ARMYs did not like Jungkook’s long hair, arguing that it took away the clean-cut, masculine charm they were used to. On social media, there were numerous posts urging Jungkook to return to his previous hairstyle, comparing his looks between the two eras, and even toxic remarks like “wanting to grab scissors to cut Jungkook’s hair” or questioning his masculinity.
Although those comments eventually faded away, fans were ѕнσ¢кed to realize that he had actually read all those negative remarks from a faction of conservative fans who disregarded his personal preferences. Even though Jungkook mentioned it in a lighthearted manner, ARMYs grew angry at those who tried to control or dictate what he should do with his body and appearance.
Many fans quickly took to social media to reαѕѕure him that they loved his long-hair era and would support him no matter what hairstyle he chose. Others reflected on the fact that idols like Jungkook often have to sacrifice personal preferences to please millions of fans:
- He knows Team Scissors exists. Those people are truly shameful; they invaded his freedom
- We loved you even when y'all were bald pls don't be nervous
- Jk we liked no hair already, im telling you we like every hair you do so pls
- It breaks my heart that Jungkook even thinks ARMYs would ‘hate’ him for growing his hair. He should feel free to express himself however he wants
- Those negative comments are so disappointing. Jungkook’s style is his choice — real fans will love him no matter what
- It’s sad that idols have to second-guess their own preferences because of criticism. Jungkook deserves unconditional support
- I really like Jungkook with long hair. don't want to see it because he's too hot with whatever long hair styles
- Jungkook grow it till it reaches your shoulders and I will be cheering
- Who told them we hate long hair? Jungkook, its a lie, we love long hair babe
- People trying to control his appearance are crossing the line. He deserves freedom just like anyone else
- Long hair, short hair, no matter what — Jungkook is Jungkook. His talent and heart shine brighter than any hairstyle
