Recently, the news about BTS's enlistment has made people quite surprised, but perhaps the next news is the story that makes everyone feel more shocked. It was a diplomatic official who sold Jungkook's hat for millions of KRW.
This news was spread after a post selling Jungkook's hats suddenly started gaining attention on social networks. The poster has now deleted this product, but the quick-eyed people recorded the story:
Specifically, just one day after Big Hit posted news that BTS members would start enlisting next year, there was a person claiming to be an official of the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He posted a black bucket hat and said that this is the hat Jungkook used to wear and sold it for 10 million KRW.
To make the hat's information more accurate, this person also detailed why he got it. This person said that he worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and this is the hat Jungkook left it in the waiting area when BTS paid a confidential visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to make their passports.
In fact, last September, BTS received a diplomatic passport along with the appointment letter 'President's Special Envoy for Future Generations and Culture'. They then used these items to go to the UN with President Moon Jae In and give an impressive speech there.
This person even posted a photo of the official Foreign Affairs officer's card to prove that he really worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the time. In addition, in his sales post, he also affirmed the high value of the hat is appropriate.
He also wrote, "This is a hat that BTS Jungkook wears himself. It's something that can't be obtained even with so much money. Value is expected to rise overtime since it once belonged to a global superstar.".
This man even added: "Serious inquiries only. Please do not contact me if you’re not interested in buying. Price is firm. I really do think that in the future, the hat’s value will increase way over the suggested price."
It's not clear if the hat in the photo was actually worn by Jungkook as this person claims. The seller also clarified that since then, for the next six months, Jungkook has not called or visited to retrieve it. Therefore, the ownership now belongs to the person who found it, which is the diplomatic official.
In addition, after his sale was brought to the attention of the public, there was some controversy about how he knew it was Jungkook's and didn't contact to return it immediately or why an employee Diplomacy did this again, the seller deleted his post. This person even replied to some messages saying "I'm not breaking the law, why are you reporting?", "I quit my job at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yet".
Currently, many people believe that this person intentionally stole Jungkook's hat, some doubt whether it is real Jungkook's hat or not.
Netizens also found an issue with the claim that the item’s ownership was transferred after six months. One K-netizen called attention to the legality of the claim while asking fans to report the alleged government employee to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office: "For one, the government worker in question does not understand how the law works. The ownership of a lost item can only transfer to the finder if the item’s original owner is unidentifiable. This worker knows for a fact that the item belonged to Jungkook. In this case, because the original owner is identifiable, the ownership will continue to belong to Jungkook unless Jungkook officially releases his right to ownership. Therefore, at this point, this worker could be charged with theft and/or embezzlement. Please report to the auditing department’s manager at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”
But at this time, the hat has been marked as sold, indicating someone shelled out the nearly $7,000 USD for the hat.
